The Ballot 'The Trumpeting Angel' was designed in 1917 by Emile Edmond Peynot (1850-1932). Peynot was a student of the noted French sculptor Robinet, and by the 1880's he began to receive national recognition for his statuary. Throughout his lifetime he produced numerous commissions, some of which are found at Auxerre and Fountainbleau. Peynot was a Knight of the Legion of Honor and became an officer of this most prestigious institution in 1903.
The Ballot brothers, Gabriel Ernest and Maurice, founded their company in 1905, as makers of automobile and marine engines. The company was re-founded as Etablissements Ballot SA in 1910. The company entered motor racing in the 1919 Indianapolis 500 with a straight-eight cylinder 4.9 litre car followed by a 3-litre for the 1921 French Grand Prix. As well as racing engines, the company made a range of road engines which were fitted to their own production cars, the customer could order a Ballot mascot
