1948 Lincoln Continental Custom Convertible
Originally conceived as one of Edsel Fords personal cars in 1939, the attention from its good looks by his friends pushed Ford to put Edsel's custom Lincoln design into production as the Continental in 1940. Based on the Zephyr and offered in both coupe and convertible forms, the Continental shared the Zephyrs 125 inch wheelbase and twelve cylinder engine, but had a longer hood, was lower, was sectioned by 3 inches and was $3000 dollars, almost double the cost of the Zephyr. For the 1941 model year the Continental was refined, looking very similar to the 1940 cars but having design refinements such as push button door handles and upgraded trim. The Lincoln Continental is arguably one of the best looking immediate prewar American cars and one of the best looking of all time. The continental would be kept as part of the Lincoln lineup until 1948, each year the Continental was upgraded to resemble somewhat to the companies “standard models” and stayed a high quality low sleek looking personal luxury car until the end.
Over the years, especially in the 1940's and 1950's people have always loved to customize cars to make them sleeker, better looking and faster in some way as was done in the hot rod and custom movements of the 1940's and 1950's. Customizing was usually done to Fords or Mercurys, but a Lincoln continental was a car that already had that custom sleek look from the start and needs very little in way of looks to go up against some of the best looking customs of its time.
Offered here is a very nice and very unique 1948 Lincoln Continental convertible with not only a beautiful restoration, but something different hiding under the skin. On the outside this Continental appears completely stock with beautiful deep blue paint and stunning blue leather interior done to original specifications, but underneath is a completely different animal with a 1972 Mercury Cougar chassis complete with power disc brakes and a rebuilt Ford 351 Cleveland V8 engine and C6 automatic transmission that moves this Continental down the road quickly and comfortably. It is also equipped with the Cougar power steering and power brake unit making this car extremely easy to drive. Other modern equipment includes a “vintage air” air conditioning unit, tilt steering column, power windows and power top. Over $80,000 in receipts from the work done are included with the car as well as another $20,000 done by the current owner. This is the most incredible and modern 1948 Lincoln Continental on the planet. If you want a great antique car to drive with the top down that wont give you any trouble, this car is as good as it gets. Contact us today for more information.
