Beginning in the 1960's Datsun realized that there was a large demand for affordable sports cars which they initially answered with the small four cylinder "Fairlady" roadsters. Mainly introduced to compete with British and Italian cars of the time. Next, Datsun took it to another level by offering its new GT model in 1970; the 240Z which dominated the SCCA C production class for 10 years. Dubbed the Porsche 911-beater. In 1975, to keep up with strict federal requirements, Datsun introduced the technically updated 280Z with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and a slightly larger engine than the 240. At a time when sports cars were were choked by emissions, the 280Z actually still performed very well while staying more efficient than ever before. In 1981, the turbocharged 280ZX was introduced which added even more horsepower bumping it up to 2.8 liters. The manual transmission offered by Nissan at the time was not strong enough for the added torque of the turbocharged engine, so no 1981 Turbos were offered with the manual transmission in 1981.
