Upon the arrival of World War II the U.S. military needed a vehicle that could withstand anything and drive through anything. Ford, Willys and Bantam all submitted prototypes to the government, but the Willys MB was far superior both in durability and mechanical strength with its 60 horsepower flathead 4 cylinder that far exceeded the U.S. governments requirements. The do anything, go anywhere vehicle named the "Jeep" proved to be exactly what it was made for and more. After the war, Willys saw a need and a market for durable utilitarian vehicles for all the G.I.'s returning from the war so in 1946 they introduced the civilian model of their famous MB that helped win the war: the CJ-2A.
