1938 Cadillac Sixty Special
Bill Mitchell, the designer of the 1938 Cadillac Sixty-Special, had been with General Motors’ Art and Color Section less than a year when he was promoted to head Cadillac and LaSalle styling. The Cadillac Sixty-Special was his first design for Cadillac and it proved the insight of his advancement. It is one of the great designs of Thirties and a milestone for Cadillac styling.
Mitchell, who would later head General Motors's design department in the Sixties and Seventies, created some of the most iconic GM designs of that time including such clean designs as the 1963 Buick Riviera, 1963 Corvette and 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado. However the 1938 Sixty-Special continued as one of Mitchell's favorite designs.
The first real production American "Sports Sedan," built on a double-drop frame, it was three-inches lower than other Cadillac models. This low profile improved handling and allowed for the elimination of running boards. This was a first for a car from the “Big Three.” One of the most timeless and sporty cars from the classic era.
This 1938 Sixty Special is one of the nicest original examples we have ever seen. Single family owned here in Connecticut from 1938 until only a few years ago, this car has always been stored indoors and always well kept. The underside is in incredible original condition and can only be described as really clean. It was repainted a few years ago in its original dark green color and is perfectly straight and well done. Most of the chrome is original and in wonderful condition as well. Inside, the upholstery is mostly original as is the headliner. It is important to note that not only is the dark green color of this car rare, but the interior being completely leather including the headliner is also very rare and was a special order. Mechanically it was treated to an engine rebuild about 5 years ago and it runs extremely well and at idle you can't even hear it run. It drives and shifts perfectly as well, a really fantastic car. If you are looking for a classic era sports sedan, it doesn't get much better than this. This is also a full classic in the Classic Car Club of America so it is eligible for all of their events.
